Torrevieja

Situated next to the sea in the South of the Valencian Community, Torrevieja is surrounded by two large natural saltwater lagoons which form the well known salterns of Torrevieja, considered the biggest in Europe.  They are famous for their huge population of flamingos.  Torrevieja is 47km from Alicante, the provincial capital, and about 35km from the airports of Alicante and San Javier.  It stands out for its conversion in recent years into a first class tourist centre.  The town square is very picturesque, with a small church and street cafes.  There are many shops to browse through and boat trips can be taken from the town s lively harbour.  Each evening there is a craft market along the harbour front and every Friday there is a huge street market, possibly the largest one in the Costa Blanca.

CLIMATE

Torrevieja s climate is dry and equable throughout the year with 320 days of sun.  Average daily terperatures are Jan 15c, Feb 15c, Mar 19c, Apr 20c, May 22c, Jun 28c, Jul 30c, Aug 29c, Sep 28c, Oct 24c, Nov 21c, Dec 15c

RECREATIONAL FACILITIES close to La Dama

Among the opportunities for recreation, relaxation and amusement, the town places at the disposal of all its visitors one of the best Yacht Clubs in Spain, tennis and golf clubs with four 18 hole championship golf courses, a flying club, a horse riding school, and municipal sports centre with an Olympic sized indoor pool.  There is also a municipal football stadium, bull ring, water park, fairground, theatre, 10 pin bowling centre, huge new soft play centre and several cinemas.

Terramitica is a fantastic water park suitable for adults and children.  Its the largest in Europe and is very well supervised and maintained.

Some of the best beaches can be found close to town, including Los Locas, Playa Del Cura and La Mata.  Along the front of Los Locas (adjacent to La Dama) there are bars and restaurants with more bars throughout the back streets.  There are butchers, fishmongers, spit roasted chicken shops, bakeries and supermarkets, all providing mouth watering food at extremenly reasonable prices.

Just five minutes walk away from Los Locas Beach is the totally pedestrianised promenade and beach of Playa Del Cura, where you can happily watch the children on the beach whilst having a nice relaxing meal in one of the promenade based restaurants at the same time.  You will find that most of the restaurants in Torrevieja are very child friendly and understnad the joys of dining out with young children.

From these two beaches you are within easy walking distance, all the way along the sea front, of the lively town centre of Torrevieja where you will find street markets, a marina and harbour, resident fun fair, buzzing night life and an extensive range of restaurants and shops.  The main meeting place in town is usually the fountain overlooking the beautiful marina, where you can enjoy a morning coffee.

Unlike many spanish destinations Torrevieja is not a holiday area dominated by souvenir shops and bars offering Irish and English breakfasts.  The town is still a working town with a history of salt production and an active fishing industry.
